My Mothers family is from Eaton Bray Snoxell,s Copperwaite,s,and have connection to a number of other families.
I am searching for information on the
Rollings family,s of which there appear to a lot, my nearest relative would be my Grand Aunt Florence Rollings (nee Copperwaite) who was married to George Rollings they had five children Edna, Muriel, Harold,
Horace/John and Stewart they lived in The Victoria a Pub or Beer House on the High Street, The sons worked for Wallaces the market gardeners and they were keen cricketers.
Any information on the Rollings family would greatfully appreciated

Hi Michael
Found the marriage in 1912 for Florence and George.
Are you looking for info on children or going back into George's family.

#1303 Tom n Harry, 23 August 2012, 10:45

There are a few George's born Eaton Bray but I think your man is born 1887 to parents Arthur Rollings and Ann Maria Tearle.
On the 1911 census he is living in Edlesborough Bucks with 2 of his brothers Fred c1897 and Arthur c1899. He is a Nurseryman Gardener.

ROLLINGS G R Private, 16th Essex Regiment

High St Eaton Bray

He joined in October 1916 and after his training was stationed at various depots with his unit engaged on guard and other duties. He was unable to obtain his transfer to a theatre of war owing to medical unfitness but rendered excellent services until his demobilisation in February 1919.

Think this is George from the National Roll of The Great War.

Have seen the Roll of Honour listed in Eaton Bray Church and the above entry confirms George Rollings of the Essex Regiment.

Tom n Harry - Thank you for your very quick reply, I am looking to trace the Rolling family ancestors. Your info on Arthur Rollings and Ann Maria Tearle gives a good starting point and your additional info on George will help to make the tree more than just a collection of names.
Thanks once again
Michael

Michael
Can't find any evidence that the Rollings family lived at the Victoria but in 1889 it was run by a John Copperwaite. The rollings family did have the Hope and Anchor for a number of years.
See the link to Beds and Luton Archives on our History Page.

Tom n Harry - John Copperwaite was my great grandfather and Jane Ward great grandmother, John died in 1894.  I believe that Jane must have taken over the licence but the Victoria did not get a licence after 1916.
I can vaguely remember visiting Aunt Flo there when very small and I believe her daughter Muriel lived there until a few years ago

hi, I live at 28 High Street in EB which used to be The Volunteer Inn beerhouse and before that it was called The Rifleman. although the records are scant, we know that there was a G Rollings who was a tenant in the pub just after it closed in the 1920s - theres a mention of him here: www.bedfordshire.gov.uk/CommunityAndLiving/ArchivesAndRecordOffice/ CommunityArchives/EatonBray/TheVolunteerBeerhouseEatonBray.aspx

I'd  love to find out more about him and if you have any info we can share!
