Violent storms led to flooding in Dunstable and the surrounding villages. A massive mopping-up operation had been launched on Wednesday morning.

Kensworth was the worst-hit area, with neighbours being woken by fierce thunderclaps, only to find water lapping at their doorsteps.

In Eaton Bray, a lake formed outside the White Horse pub, and a ford developed at the foot of Lancot Hill, Totternhoe.

In Dunstable, flooding hit the area under the Church Street bridge, the road leading to Mansead Schol, and homes in Southwood Road and Langdale Road.
