I'm looking into the Bates family from Eaton Bray in particular, my 3 x Great Grandfather Matthew Bates born 1795 the son of Matthew Bates and Ann Osborn.

Matthew lived in the village until he joined the Army in 1814 eventually being invalided out in 1834 after serving with the Coldstream Guards for 19 years.

From his service record it appears that he was present at Waterloo in Hougoumont Chateaux with the 2nd Battalion from 1pm onwards. This, in conjunction with his time with the "Army of Occupation" in France and Flanders earned him an extra 2 years service which, entitled him to be a Chelsea Pensioner.

After he left the Army he worked as an Ostler in London until 1850 before moving to Harpenden eventually passing away in 1851.

If anybody else is descended from Matthew I would like to hear from them.

Regards

David
